Comodo CEO and internet security insider Melih Abdulhayoglu describes how hackers are continuing to expand their soft target attack zone by moving into the educational market. As reported in the Washington Post, school districts in Colorado, Oklahoma, Illinois and a University in Wisconsin have all reported attacks, and sadly significant financial losses as a result of hackers stealing their online banking details and setting up bogus funds transfers. Small businesses, and now as we’re seeing educational institutions meet hackers soft-target criteria of having appreciable amounts of money that they’re managing electronically but lacking the security infrastructure of larger organizations. For organizations without a deep security infrastructure, using outmoded security solutions such as conventional antivirus software makes them an even softer target. Such organizations in particular should be using security solutions with threat prevention, not threat detection, as their first line of defense.
